PLEASE READ THE WIKI GUIDE ENTIRELY AND MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE RISKS!

IF YOU DON'T FOLLOW THE GUIDE THOROUGHLY YOU WILL END UP WITH A BRICKED LCD TV!

Introduction

The LG LCD LH series have a USB port that is designated only for service use by LG. Below you can see a screenshot of an LG LH3000 LCD TV and the place where the USB port is positioned.

LG LH3000 LCD TV

The hack adds a new menu on your LCD TV screen called USB. With this hack you're able to play video files, including 1080p mkv files, audio files and image files.

In simple terms your LCD TV becomes an HD media player.

You can even connect your external hard drive and watch movies from it.

In order to simplify things below we'll share the common information and guides that you would need to use this feature on your LG LH series.

WARNING! Please read this first or you will brick your TV set!

NOTE: This is worth remembering. This firmware hack is only for the LH, LF & some LU Series EUROPEAN MODELS.

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT try this at other models as YOU WILL BRICK YOUR TV! DON'T TRY THIS WITH USA/CA/ASIA MODELS (LH7000 users avoid as this model doesn't work and already has USB working)

Along with this goes the assumption that I am not to be held responsible for the damage you might cause by following this guide.

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

However if you follow/read the wiki thoroughly, you'll be fine.

WARNING: I'm sorry to have to write this again, but lately there have been reports of many people bricking their TV sets by not reading the whole wiki and the limitations to certain models.

PLEASE DON'T JUST skim through the wiki and say: Cool, I'll try this!

MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE RISKS AND THAT YOUR TV MODEL IS SUPPORTED !

Supported models

Supported models

The models that this firmware hack can be applied to are the LH, LF & some LU series EUROPEAN MODELS.

These are the models that support this hack. Check if your TV set is on this list.

Don't try this fimware with the USA/CANADA/ASIA/AUSTRALIA MODELS as you will brick your TV!

LH2000 - LH3000 - LH4000 - LU4000 - LU5000 - LF2500 -> the rest of models already have USB working

Firmware version

In order to activate the USB port in the LG LCD TV models mentioned above, you need to be on Firmware version 3.15 of your LCD TV. Therefore it is important to check what firmware version you have before applying the hack. You can do that by pressing MENU on the remote, then SETUP and then go to DIAGNOSTICS.

If you're on V 3.15 then you're good to go! If you're on versions above 3.15 then you need to follow the steps mentioned in this wiki in the section Above 3.15

PREVIEW

Here's two YouTube videos that shows what the end result is like:

Version 3.15

You can see in the diagnostic screen if you have v. 3.15 as shown below:

How to enable USB playback

Before we start:

This hack will flash your firmware which will/might void your warranty. If you follow the guide and read it thoroughly you'll be just fine. However if you're uneasy at trying this there's a way to accomplish this with a InfraRed (IrDA) hack. If you want to go that way please follow the IR Hack section of the wiki.

Still here? WOW! You're a brave soul! OK then, let's continue.

After you've made sure you're on v.3.15 here's the steps required to enable USB playback:

  1. Press and hold OK on the remote and on the TV set and wait for 5 seconds.
  2. When asked for password enter this password: 0000 or 0413
  3. After you entered the service menu go to Tool Option 3 as shown below: Image1isa.jpg
  4. After you've entered Tool Option3, change these values

EMF (JPEG,MP3) to 1

Divx to HD

as shown below:

DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE, AS YOU CAN BRICK YOUR TV !

YOU MIGHT FEEL BRAVE ENOUGH TO PLAY WITH THE OTHER SETTINGS, BUT YOU WILL BRICK YOUR TV AND END UP WITH A BRICKED TV SET. ONLY CHANGE WHAT IS SHOWN ABOVE !

That's it! Now you can go back and when you press MENU on your remote you'll see that a new USB item in your menu has appeared.

USBMENU.jpg

There you go! Enjoy your new LCD TV & Media Player.

Above v.3.15

If you see in your DIAGNOSTIC screen that your LCD TV has a firmware version above v.3.15 then this hack won't work with the MENU combination. You will need to downgrade the firmware to version 3.15 initially so that you can enable the hack with the combination from above and then you can upgrade and the hack will still be functional.

Before we start, if you're above V3.15 the first suggestion is to try the IR Hack, which is safer and doesn't void your warranty.

If however for some reason you can't find a remote, then you can follow the guide below.

If you have V3.48 or V3.47 on your DIAGNOSTIC screen don't try to downgrade with this method as you will brick your TV! You have been WARNED!

Simply upgrade first to V3.55 and then downgrade to V3.15.

YOU CAN only downgrade with this method if your firmware is V3.24, V3.37, V3.40,V3.55 AND V3.63 (which is the latest firmware)

If you're uneasy about trying this you can try the IR Hack with the remote which can enable USB playback on other models beside the supported ones by the firmware hack. More info here.

UPDATE: Those above V3.40 can try an alternate method for enabling USB playback with the IR Hack. gently has put up a nice guide on how to do this. To quote him:

"Also, it's the only way to enable DivX playback onto newer models shipping with firmware revisions v3.47 and v3.48. Anything else on this sets will brick it."

Virtual Remote Control

Theoretically should works with all the new LG televisions (LD series) LCD

Technically, It should be possible to play movies (with movie player) as you play music with built in music player in LG TV.

I discovered that you need to just change one flag from 0 to 1 in some hidden menu known as EZ-Adjust menu. Information on Divx flag (in EZ-Adjust menu) See above.

There are several tips to reach at EZ-Adjust (Hidden menu) where some suggests to buy universal remotes, IR hack and firmware upgrade/downgrade. Since there is RS232 port available on LG TV and manual suggest that this is for serial communication with TV. Actually TV has operating system “saturn6” and you can communicate with OS via serial port.

So I thought to build Remote control for LCD TV running on my Laptop and communicate with TV via serial port (RS232). The source code for this application is attached here and setup for this application is here. If .net framework 4.0 is already installed on you system you may download executables only.

What else you will need to run this:

  1. Cable (RS232);
  2. USB to Serial Convertor (If your system doesn’t have COM port)

Before running this application you need to identify the com port on which your TV is connected. Run the application, select correct COM port and click on button “On” (Communication).

Debug mode

How to enable DIVX and movie capability on LG 42LD450 using null wired serial cable

  1. Switch on your TV, go to the option menu and Set ID to 1.
  2. Connect PC via COM port or USB2COM adapter into RS232 connector on the TV
  3. Run any terminal program on the PC (hyperterminal for example)
  4. Set following parameters for COM port: speed 9600 flow control: none. All other leave at the defaults.
  5. In terminal enter: "af 0 ff" and press enter You should get following response "f 00 OK8c04x"
  6. To activate Media player enter: "af 0 0cc 040" and press enter.
  7. Restart TV. Menu submenu USB should appear in the main TV menu.
  8. If anything goes wrong, just restore the Tool option number enter "af 0 08c 040" and press enter.

Another IRda hack

You can simply use a cheap Meliconi Fully8 remote control (10-12€) or a more expensive Meliconi Gumbodyremote control. The programming code for LG xxLHxxxx (or LF or LU) televisions is 98000142164260. The programming code (OBC) for EZ ADJUST menu is 255, for IN-START menu it's 251 and IN-STOP (factory reset) 250. All instructions to program the remotes -> Fully8 Help On-Line Gumbody Help On-Line

Downgrade Guide

WARNING: There are reports that when upgrading to V3.63 some TV sets get bricked or don't function adequately! PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM V3.63 for now, use V3.55 when you upgrade

In order to downgrade to V3.15 from firmware versions above V3.15 such as V3.24, V3.37, V3.40 or V3.55 in order to enable the USB hack follow these steps:

  1. Download the V3.15 firmware. DOWNLOAD LINK Alternate LINK (Note:There are some reports that the file you download might be corrupted, which might result in being unable to install/downgrade. No worries. Try downloading the file again.)
  2. Put the file in a USB stick on a folder called LG_DTV (big letters) and connect the USB stick on your TV
  3. Go to MENU - OPTION and then press FAV 7 times
  4. Then you will be prompted if you want to install firmware
  5. Press YES and wait for the process to finish.
  6. When finished we follow the steps mentioned in the section #How to enable USB playback
  7. You can now upgrade to V3.55 (the latest is 3.63 but there have been reports of people bricking their TV by upgrading to 3.63, so for now IT IS RECOMMENDED that you upgrade to V3.55) by placing the firmware file in the LG_DTV folder and put the USB stick on the TV. It will ask you to upgrade, press YES and voila! (Note:There are some reports that the file you download might be corrupted, which might result in being unable to install/downgrade. No worries. Try downloading the file again.)

The USB hack is saved even tough you've upgraded.

FIRMWARE: For a list of available firmwares to download please check the LG Firmware Updates page.

Above v.3.40

For the moment you can downgrade to V3.15 only if your firmware version is up to V3.24, V3.37, V3.40, V3.55 and V3.63

If you have V3.48 or V3.47 on your DIAGNOSTIC screen don't try to downgrade with this method as you will brick your TV! You have been WARNED!

Simply upgrade first to V3.55 and then downgrade to V3.15.

UPDATE: Those above V3.40 can try an alternate method for enabling USB playback with the IrDA hack. gently has put up a nice guide on how to do this.

To quote him: "Also, it's the only way to enable DivX playback onto newer models shipping with firmware revisions v3.47 and v3.48. Anything else on this sets will brick it." READ HERE

Restoring the TV's original firmware

if you've had trouble, or you've changed other things in service menu which weren't supposed to be changed, or used the firmware on a TV that is not supported. In general f you have trouble after upgrading to a newer version and the TV doesn't work properly anymore.

There's a combination with the LG remote that can help you restore the TV's original firmware - depending on damage done it may not always fix the TV as some settings remain after firmware has been changed (like the USB hack)Here's how it goes:

  1. Open MENU
  2. Go to OPTIONS (but don't press OK, just highlight the OPTIONS)
  3. Press the number "9" in your remote 7 times.

After it should say "Restore program completed". This (should) revert you back to the original factory firmware.

Supported Filetypes

The LG LCD TV's that make use of the USB playback hack can open/play the following filetypes (as described in user manual):

Filetypes.jpg

DTS

When playing MKV or AVI files with DTS sound, you will get a message Unsupported Audio!

This is because LG doesn't support DTS Audio.

Now that's tough hearing after you've downloaded a 8GB 1080p MKV movie and realizing you can't hear the sound.

But, there's a remedy to that.

You need to download the MKV Audio Converter and follow this tutorial to convert the DTS sound so that you can play it on your LG.

Follow that tutorial and you'll need 15-30 min (depending on your computer power) to convert an 8GB movie.

After the conversion is done, the movie will play seamlessly on your LG LCD TV.

SUBTITLES DO NOT SHOW UP OR DISAPPEAR To solve this problem, you need to edit the .srt file (subtitle) [Here's a link to http://lgusb.wikispaces.com/#the solution found on the AVSFORUM]
